The seminar was organized by PIANC's international Environmental Commission (EnviCom) and PIANC USA. EnviCom's global mission relates to both broad and specific issues related to sustainability, environmental risks, and navigation. It also develops and provides environmental guidance for sustainable waterborne transport, ports and waterways. — posted 31 December 2009 Call for PIANC Marina Design Excellence 'Jack Nichol' Award 2010PIANC established the PIANC Marina Design Excellence 'Jack Nichol' Award in 2002 in memory of the late Jack Nichol, a distinguished member of the PIANC Recreational Navigation Commission and noted marina designer. The purpose of the Award is to recognize excellence in the design of modern recreational boating facilities around the world. Applications may be submitted by both PIANC National Sections and individual applicants. As it was becoming outdated, PIANC decided in 2006 to launch a new Working Group to update the report, and 2009 report was the result: Innovations in Navigation Lock Design (Report 106-2009). The new report must be considered more as a complement to the 1986 report than a replacement version, and focuses on new design techniques and concepts that were not reported in the former report. It covers all the aspects of the design of a lock but does not duplicate the material included in the former report. The third academy launched by Civil Engineering Certification, Inc., ACOPNE will complement the Coasts, Oceans, Ports, and Rivers Institute by bestowing diplomate credentials to those who have excelled in one or more of COPRI's sub-disciplines. CEC was created in 2004 by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Board of Direction to provide a mechanism for post-licensure certification of various civil engineering specialties. ACOPNE is the third academy created after AAWRE and AGP. — posted 23 October 2009 PIANC USA Welcomes New Assistant Secretary of the Army (Civil Works)Jo-Ellen Darcy was sworn in as the new Assistant Secretary of the Army (Civil Works) on August 12, 2009. Ms. Darcy is the 11th person and second woman to hold this position. She will serve as PIANC USA's new Chairperson. Ms. Darcy will have primary responsibility over the Department of the Army's programs for conservation and development of the nation's water resources, including flood damage reduction, river and harbor navigation, environmental restoration and protection, water supply, shore protection, hydropower, and recreation. — posted 27 August 2009 2009 Class of Fellows AnnouncedOn July 15, 2009, PIANC USA honored four of its veteran members for their contributions to and distinction in the Association by promoting them to the Fellow member grade. At the PIANC USA Annual Meeting in Pittsburgh, PA, PIANC USA's President, Major General Bo Temple, presented the 2009 Class of Fellows with a medal and thanked them for their service. The 2009 PIANC USA Fellows included Mr. Thomas M. Ballentine, Mr. Harry N. Cook, Dr. Robert M. Engler, and Mr. John P. Woodley, Jr. — posted 27 August 2009 U.S. Leads Task Group on Climate ChangePIANC headquarters has set up a permanent cross-cutting "Commission Task Group on Climate Change," led by the Environmental Commission (EnviCom). The permanent task group will be chaired by Dr. Kathleen D. White from PIANC USA. As climate change is and will be an ongoing hot political issue with overarching importance, PIANC feels it is essential that the waterborne transport sector be prepared to be an active partner in this fast developing field. — posted 27 August 2009 PIANC USA Talks Port Environmental Protection in BrazilLillian Almodovar, Senior Manager of the U.S. Army Engineer Institute for Water Resources, participated in the First Hemispheric Convention on Port Environmental Protection sponsored by the Organization of American States, Inter-American Committee on Ports (OAS-CIP), and the Government of Parana, Brazil. The Convention was held July 22 - 25, 2009 in Fox de Iguacu, Brazil. The meeting will be hosted by the Port of Pittsburgh Commission & the USACE Pittsburgh District. There will be a full-day technical program on July 15, as well as a walking tour of the dewatered Emsworth Main Lock Chamber on July 16. Plans also include a "Young Professionals" happy hour and a networking reception at PNC Park, a classic-style ballpark with excellent views of the Allegheny riverfront and downtown Pittsburgh skyline. Knight was appointed to the PIANC USA National Commission. She replaces Dr. Robert Randall of Texas A & M University, who retired after eight years of service on the Commission. Dr. Knight is currently the Director of the Office of Policy, Planning and Evaluation for Oceanic and Atmospheric Research at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
