FEATURED ARTICLES:Save the Date for the PIANC USA 2010 Annual Meeting!The PIANC USA 2010 Annual Membership Meeting will take place on September 22, 2010 (8:30am to 5:30pm) in Boston, Mass. We are planning an exciting day of technical presentations and discussions, as well as networking events. Young Professionals (YPs) are invited to come early for a YP "Meet and Greet" Coffee (8:00am), and the day will end with the opportunity to network with National Waterways Conference attendees at the evening cocktail reception (6:00pm). More information: Agenda (pdf, 230 KB) | Registration Form (pdf, 80 KB) USA to Host the Next PIANC World Congress – 2014 in San FranciscoThe US Section of PIANC is proud to announce that it will host the next PIANC World Congress (2014) in San Francisco, California. Every four years, a Congress, open to members and non-members, is held in one of PIANC's member countries in order to present and discuss topics relevant to the waterborne transport infrastructure sector. PIANC Commissioner Mr. Dominic Izzo, KBR, will serve as the 2014 Congress Chair. Over the course of the next year, PIANC USA and Mr. Izzo will be organizing a team to plan the Congress, and we will be looking for volunteers (especially for the technical committee, Young Professional Committee, and the local organizing committee). More information: Full story PIANC NEWSNavigation Meets "The Mersey Beat" - PIANC MMX Congress and Annual General Assembly in LiverpoolDespite the volcanic ash clouds, more than 500 participants descended upon the "home of the Beatles" when PIANC held its 32nd International Congress and Annual General Assembly in Liverpool, UK, May 9-14, 2010. More information: Full story | Photo Gallery And The Award Goes to…PIANC established the PIANC Marina Design Excellence 'Jack Nichol' Award in 2002 in memory of the late Jack Nichol, a distinguished member of the PIANC Recreational Navigation Commission and noted marina designer. The purpose of the Award is to recognise excellence in the design of modern recreational boating facilities around the world. This year's award was presented in Liverpool at the PIANC World Congress, and went to: BAHIA MAR YACHTING CENTER Applications for next year's award may be submitted by both PIANC National Sections and individual applicants. Applications for the 2011 Award are due: September 30, 2010. More information: Full story Another Successful Partnership — PORTS 2010 ConferencePIANC USA again partnered with ASCE's Coasts, Oceans, Ports and Rivers Institute (COPRI) to organize another highly successful PORTS conference, this year in Jacksonville, FL (April 26 - 28). PORTS 2010 "Building on the Past, Respecting the Future" was the twelfth in a series of international port and harbor development specialty conferences held by ASCE on a tri-annual basis since 1977. The US Army Corps of Engineers' Major General Bo Temple delivered the keynote address at the opening plenary session. Also speaking during the conference general sessions were State Representative Lake Ray III (an engineer!), Brian Brenner (author of Don't Throw This Away! Additionally, each working group is supported by a subcommittee that assists the principal representatives with preparation of the U.S. portions of the report. No travel is required for subcommittee involvement since the work can be handled via e-mail. If you are interested in participating on the subcommittee or have questions about current working groups, please email pianc@usace.army.mil. The ceremony marked the launch of the new academy and honored its first founding engineer Diplomates. The speakers for the ceremony included COPRI President Ron Noble, P.E., L.S., F.ASCE, Civil Engineering Certification, Inc.
