FEATURED ARTICLES:Message from the President (AGA news)PIANC Annual General Assembly 2009 in Helsinki, Finland PIANC Annual Meeting - "Once in a Lifetime" View of a De-Watered LockPIANC USA will hold its 2009 Annual Meeting and technical tour in Pittsburgh, PA, on July 15 - 16, 2009. The meeting will be hosted by the Port of Pittsburgh Commission & the USACE Pittsburgh District. There will be a full-day technical program on July 15, as well as a walking tour of the dewatered Emsworth Main Lock Chamber on July 16. Plans also include a "Young Professionals" happy hour and a networking reception at PNC Park, a classic-style ballpark with excellent views of the Allegheny riverfront and downtown Pittsburgh skyline. Updated agenda and registration form are posted. PIANC NEWSPIANC USA Welcomes New Commissioner Dr. Sandra KnightOn June 1, 2009, Dr. Sandra K. Knight was appointed to the PIANC USA National Commission. She replaces Dr. Robert Randall of Texas A & M University, who retired after eight years of service on the Commission. Dr. Knight is currently the Director of the Office of Policy, Planning and Evaluation for Oceanic and Atmospheric Research at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). She served on the ExCom as chair of the Inland Waterways commission (INCOM) from 2004-2007 and served as the US Representative to InCom from 1998-2004. New Working Groups Announced - Call for MembersPIANC recently announced several new working groups. Please see the "Terms of Reference" for more information on each group.

Newest Lock Chamber at McAlpine Open to Navigation IndustryThe 2007 Smart Rivers Conference toured the construction progress of the new chamber at McAlpine in September of 2007, but the construction is now complete! McAlpine is located along the Ohio, a critical marine highway that serves industry throughout six Midwestern states. The transportation of goods and industrial supplies along this vital artery is key to economic health and important to many jobs in the region. Young Professionals CornerPittsburgh, PA (July 2009): PIANC USA has organized a Young Professionals Happy Hour on July 15, immediately following the Annual Meeting. Please join us at 5:15pm in the Omni William Penn Hotel lobby bar for a drink before we head out together to the Networking Reception at PNC Park (home of the Pittsburgh Pirates). The PIANC International Environmental Commission (EnviCom) is organizing a technical seminar on Navigation and the Environment, to be held in New Orleans, LA, on October 28, 2009. EnviCom's mission relates to both broad and specific issues related to sustainability, environmental risks, and navigation. It also develops and provides environmental guidance for sustainable waterborne transport, ports and waterways. The seminar will address 'hot topics' related to these issues, including but not limited to: Gulf of Mexico Challenges and Opportunities, Global Navigation and Climate Change, Working with Nature for Sustainable Development, and Environmental Risk Assessment and Management. Register Now Smart Rivers 2009Register now for the Smart Rivers Conference, to be held September 06-09, 2009, at the Vienna City Hall in Vienna, Austria. The aim of this event is to strengthen and reinforce cooperative activities and to promote inland water navigation. It also aims to encourage mutual dialog between Europe and the USA. PIANC "Coffee Talk" at National Waterways Conference, Inc. Annual MeetingJoin us for coffee as we discuss the "Future of Inland Navigation" at the National Waterways Conference, Inc., Annual Meeting (September 23-25, 2009). PIANC USA will host a 'coffee discussion group' at this year's meeting in Charleston, WV. All National Waterways Conference, Inc. attendees are welcome to attend.
