Small Corporate Member: Collins

“Collins” has become synonymous with waterfront structures over the past 30 years. Collins’ focus on the inspection, design and rehabilitation of sustainable waterfront structures is the result of providing decades of design and inspection services for waterfront facilities and infrastructure. Collins does not maintain a separate inspection group; rather, a large portion of the firm’s staff is involved in structural condition inspections at all times with all work performed under the supervision of professional engineers (PEs). Staff includes engineer-divers (including commercially trained engineer-divers), certified weld inspectors (CWI), non-destructive testing (NDT) personnel, and engineers trained in confined space procedures. Documentation is tailored to meet client needs, but generally includes written reports documenting findings with repair or re-inspection recommendations. Often, data is assembled into purpose-built databases.
From concept development to final design; and from construction phase services to asset management, Collins combines years of design experience with unparalleled above water and underwater inspection expertise. Collins’ structural engineer-divers have first-hand knowledge of waterfront structures and their elements that are durable and those that tend to deteriorate with constant exposure to the harsh marine environment. Such experience provides a heightened awareness of the practicality of using certain materials in a marine environment.
Collins provides the complete package of waterfront and underwater engineering services, including above and below water inspection and assessment; analysis, evaluation, and design of necessary repairs or new facilities; and construction administration and inspection to ensure proper facility rehabilitation. The firm delivers a diverse and all-inclusive approach needed for waterfront assessment, rehabilitation, and new facility projects.
Collins works closely with clients in the management of waterfront facilities, from commercial ports to shipyards to military operations. Services provided include assessment of current asset conditions, forecasting future requirements, and prioritization of capital projects. Priorities are assessed based on multiple parameters, including economics and the environment, which aids in the development of asset management protocols specific to each client’s needs.
Collins’ problem solvers are experienced in large and small projects, from upgrades of single mooring fittings to full-scale rehabilitations. Value engineered designs are the result of years of working in partnership with marine contractors through which Collins has developed a thorough understanding of the complexities and realities associated with marine projects. Collins provides engineering ingenuity and realistic, reliable, cost-effective solutions to complex problems.
