PIANC USA’s new President, Major General Michael J. Walsh, US Army Corps of Engineers’ Deputy Commanding General for Civil and Emergency Operations, was just named a “Top 25 Newsmaker of 2011” by Engineer News Record. MG Walsh was recognized for his successful management of the Mississippi River & Tributaries System during the floods of 2011, while serving as Commander of the Mississippi Valley Division. He is credited with preventing a disaster that would have affected 4.1 million people, inundated 10 million acres, and caused $110 billion in damages. MG Walsh will replace MG William Grisoli as the PIANC USA President.

At their most recent meeting on January 23rd in Washington DC, the PIANC USA Commissioners welcomed MG Walsh to his first Commissioners’ meeting. The Honorable Jo Ellen Darcy, ASA-CW, and other Commissioners and guests attended the meeting, including Mr. Ed Schmeltz, AECOM (& PIANC international Executive Committee member) and Mr. Reinhard Pfliegl, PIANC Austria. The Commissioners discussed plans for upcoming conferences and outreach, membership/finances, more effective leveraging of U.S. participation in Technical Working Groups, and revisions to the Strategic Plan.
