News StoryInspiring Kids to be EngineersLast week, engineers around the country celebrated National Engineers Week 2011 (Feb. 20-26). Engineers Week is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, having helped inspire three generations of children and teens. As in years past, this high-profile celebration gives engineers from all disciplines an opportunity to showcase their love of engineering and highlight the vast contribution they make to a quality of life we all enjoy. Collectively, America's engineers contribute more than one million hours annually to public service. In an annual recognition of Engineers Week, first begun by President Harry Truman in 1951, President Obama recognized the 60th anniversary of Engineers Week with an official greeting. As well, Congressman Daniel Lipinski (D-IL) sponsored a resolution honoring the nation's engineers during National Engineers Week. Congressman Lipinski applauded National Engineers Week for inspiring a generation of students and pushed his fellow Members of Congress to make math and science education a national priority.
