National Waterways Alliance Reconvenes
Washington, D.C.

As the Congress reconvenes for the Second Session of the 111th Congress, we are pleased to announce that the National Waterways Alliance has reassembled to address the numerous initiatives involving water resources policy now pending or anticipated this year. Long viewed as the leader in the development and passage of water resources policy and legislation, the Alliance is comprised of representatives from virtually every aspect of the water resources community. Included in this diverse group are representatives from the flood protection, navigation, transportation, water supply, engineering, manufacturing and agricultural communities.

Reliable, well-maintained water resources infrastructure is fundamental to America's economic and environmental well-being, and is essential to maintaining our nation's competitive position within the global economy. Our water resources infrastructure provides life-saving flood control, navigation, abundant water supplies, shore protection, water-based recreation, environmental restoration, and hydropower production, essential to our economic well-being. Moreover, waterways transportation is the safest, most energy-efficient and environmentally sound mode of transportation. A healthy and robust water resources infrastructure leads to a healthy and robust economy.

Recognizing the vital importance of America's water resources infrastructure to our nation's well-being and quality of life, the Alliance is dedicated to the promotion of reasonable policies that reflect a sound balance between economic and human needs and environmental and ecological considerations.

Convened by the National Waterways Conference, the Alliance provides a collaborative forum to address a multitude of issues, including but not limited to, the proposed Principles and Guidelines for water resources planning, floodplain management oversight, amendments to the jurisdictional scope of the Clean Water Act, the Inland Waterways Trust Fund, the Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund, and Sustainable Watershed Planning legislation.
